Frequently Asked Questions

If your question is not listed here, please give us a call at 1300 059 666 or drop me a message. You could also use the chat widget at the bottom right corner of your screen to start a live chat with us.

Psychologist or Psychiatrist ?

Psychiatrists are medical doctors who specialise in mental illnesses and are able to prescribe medication. Psychologists focus on “talk therapies” designed to help people through behavioural / cognitive / emotional etc. issues. In some cases, people will generally see both a psychiatrist and psychologist at the same time. Psychiatrists are also able to refer you to a psychologist. Both psychologists and psychiatrists require registration with their respective health board (Psychology board for us) in order to be able to practice and use the titles.

How long is a session ?

Sessions run for 50 mins each. Intake sessions may be slightly extended by 5-10 minutes for you to fill out the relevant forms and ask me any questions you might have before we begin.

Psychologist vs Psychotherapist / Counsellor

Psychologists have undergone a minimum of 6 years of training which is heavily evidence based. The use of the title “psychologist” is also regulated and only individuals with the relevant qualifications / registrations are allowed to practice as and use the term psychologist. A lot of psychological tests are also only made available for psychologists. At present, anyone can call themselves a counsellor or psychotherapist in WA so please do your research when choosing one.

Are our sessions confidential ?

Psychologists are bound by strict confidentiality rules and what happens in your sessions stays between us with 2 notable exceptions; we are required to disclose the information by law (e.g. subpoena) or if there is potential harm to yourself or others. This will always be discussed with you beforehand.

How do I get a mental health care plan for Medicare rebates ?

You can give us a call at 1300 059 666 or use the chat window at the bottom right of your screen for more information if needed. I or my practice manager are always ready to help. You could also call your GP to get more information.

Can I make an appointment without a referral ?

Yes, self-referral is always welcome. If you with to use private health or pay the full fees there is no need to get a referral. A specialist/GP referral only applies if you wish to use medicare rebates which subsidise $84.80 a session for up to 10 sessions a year.

How many sessions do I need ?

This largely depends on you and there is no fixed answer at all. Typically, the sessions allowed by medicare each year ( 10 in total ) are more than enough for most circumstances. You can send me an email if you wish to discuss this further.

I'm still on the fence about seeing a psychologist

Have a read through my entire site and if you are still confused just give me a call or use the window at bottom right to have a chat. Always happy to answer any queries you might have with no-obligations whatsoever.
